Class Web sites using the courseware management software Blackboard were made available to a pilot group of students at UT Austin in the fall 2000 semester. The group, which consisted of over four thousand students registered in one hundred fifty-two courses, was given the opportunity to respond to a survey to determine how the product met their needs. One hundred ninety-two students from twenty-four classes (seventeen of the twenty-four classes were in the formal pilot group) responded to the survey constructed by the Courseware Group staff at the Center for Instructional Technologies. Student responses by course are identified in Appendix A.

Survey questions addressed three areas: 1) computer use and Internet connectivity, 2) expertise, importance and use ratings of various courseware features and technologies, and 3) use of UT Direct.
