Real time class information updates

The ideal solution would be a fully automated mechanism, involving no individual administration by staff.
A database-driven product would be preferable.
WebCT
- Possibly requires highly individualized administration; it is not clear how to create a course automatically
- Moving a course involves changing all files referring to the course
Blackboard
- Though the use of a database simplifies the ability to update, information not entered via forms (e.g. syllabi) may be a problem
Conclusions
The flat file
vs. database issue dominated this decision. The learning curve for complex applications
using information in databases was considered to be much lower than that for
building robust applications to manage information in various flat files. Also,
the group presently possesses the knowledge and tools to write programs that
can transfer information to and from a database. When considering the services
offered to students, an automated process that rapidly updates information such
as added or dropped courses was found to be essential.
Outcome: Blackboard wins.
