Self-directed learning increases learner control and promotes student planning, managing, and organizing course materials (Brockett & Hiemstra, 1991; Candy, 1991; Caffarella, 1993).

Example: In the Cultural History of American Teenager’s class, the instructor post links to research tips, encyclopedias and other resources for students to think about how to do their own research topics.
