Self-directed learning increases learner control and promotes student planning, managing, and organizing course materials (Brockett & Hiemstra, 1991; Candy, 1991; Caffarella, 1993).

Example: The instructor provides extra information with supplemental vignettes, and students who need them use them at their own pace.
