The 2003 ~FAST Tex projects
UT Learning Center

Title:
Developmental Math Instructional Technology Project

Faculty Client:
Maria Grace Pratt, gpratt@mail.utexas.edu

Student Developer:
Xiaoyu Zhou

Project Description:
Currently, the UT Learning Center’s developmental math program consists of four math units: Fundamental Math, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. The goal of this ~FAST Tex project is to improve student instruction through effective online instructional modules, and to solve a problem of access, efficacy, and efficiency by providing students information relating to the individual homework assignments as opposed to having them search their textbooks for the information. As envisioned, the project involved the creation of sixteen training modules with instructional material that provides a video or an interactive module, followed by a math problem set. The student answers the problems before receiving feedback.

Additional areas to be included are extra math problems and their solutions, a content self-assessment component, an administrative time-tracking area, and an online gradebook.

Tutors at the UT Learning Center work with undergraduate and graduate students in diverse academic fields and on a wide variety of skill areas. Tutors also work with students enrolled in DEV000M, DEV000R, and DEV000W. This ~FAST Tex project focused on improving student instruction through effective tutor training. The online training modules created can provide instructional benefit to the more than 6000 students and tutors served each year by the Learning Center.
