Programming

The CIT offers resources on a variety of new technologies that can provide new dimensions to online course material, streamline your everyday computer work environment, and fundamentally change the way you and your students interact.

RAD Toolbox
RAD—for rapid application development—is the focus of CIT staffer Amy Miller's Web page featuring development tools she likes to use and recommend to others. Included in RAD Toolbox are links to examples, resources, documentation, and books for further study.

Designing Web sites for wireless access
The unwired Net is here. As personal digital assistants, such as the Palm and Handspring Visor, and Web-enabled cell phones become more popular, we'll see more sites enabled for these devices. See WebMonkey's "Designing Sites for PDA's" and Phone.com to learn about the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and Wireless Markup Language (WML).

AppleScript
AppleScript is an English-like language for the Macintosh used to write script files which can automate the actions of the computer and the applications which run on it.

Cascading Style Sheets
A cascading style sheet provides a set of rules describing how an HTML document should appear on a computer screen. It is a simple mechanism for adding information about layout (e.g. fonts, colors, spacing, type size) to Web documents. Style sheets can also be used to add accessibility to Web pages for those with sight or hearing impairments. Find out more about the promises of this evolving technology.

Java
These local Java resources are offered by CIT staff to give a general overview of Java and its place in Web development, and to provide a practical introduction by working through several examples of increasing complexity.

Offsite resource collections

Check these resources regularly for new information on emerging technologies.

O'Reilly Network
The newest item on O'Reilly's is its JavaScript and CSS Dev Center. Other developers' sections include Java, Linux, Perl, PHP, Wireless, and XML.

Web Developer's Virtual Library
A comprehensive illustrated encyclopedia of Web technology, the WDVL is a collection of tutorials, examples, and links to resources.

MacInstruct's Tutorial Archive
The largest collection of free Macintosh tutorials on the Internet. There is an excellent two-part MacPerl tutorial in the Multimedia and Interactive section.

Mac OS X Programming: Getting Started
This Apple site contains tutorials, samples, documentation, information on user newsletters, and other links to help programmers get started with OS X.
