Instructional strategies
Play music while setting up before class
Play a CD (or mp3) while students enter and exit. Put the cover of the
CD on the document camera so students know what youíre playing. This will
get studentsí attention and set a tone for the class. When you turn off
the music students will know immediately that you are beginning the lecture.
Integrate audio to gain attention and emphasize key
points
Audio can be a very powerful instructional tool. Sound effects during
slide transitions give students an aural cue that new information is projected.
Music and audio clips that are relevant to key points in the content add
an additional device for students to process and remember information.
Include photographs or real-life videos to inject
realism
The more true-to-life you make the issue you are presenting, the better
your audience will understand and identify with it. Remember the impact
you can add by using photos or video of people on location, people using
products or talking to the audience.
Insert illustrations and animations to clarify or
emphasize
If your topic is complex, an illustration lets you simplify the way it
looks. Illustrations and even 3-D objects and diagrams allow you to show
exploded views or views normally not seen, such as interiors and layers.
Animations are great ways to present processes.
Project different, complementary content concurrently
Take advantage of being able to project two or three things at once and/or
rapidly transistion between tools. You can project content combinations
with:
- Computer 1 (Mac) or Computer 2 (PC)
[can't split
between these two at the same time]
- Computer 3 (your laptop)
- Document camera
- Overhead projector
- Slide projector
For example, if you are in an auditorium with two
projection screens, you can write lecture notes on the overhead while showing
the textbook on the document camera and your slides on one of the computers.
