Abstract:

This proposal outlines the development of a hybrid CH301 course that marries web-based learning modules fully supported and delivered by the Quest course management system designed to drill the fundamentals of Chemistry via video and/or text with active inquiry based learning in the classroom. Access to web materials will allow more flexibility in course delivery to accommodate different learning styles while allowing valuable classroom time to be utilized to better engage the students in inquiry based active learning which will deepen conceptual understanding of material. This inquiry learning which will be achieved through exploration of research data, classroom demonstrations, and presentation of material in the context of everyday life and other disciplines. Benefits will be both deeper conceptual understanding and retention of the material and higher advancement rate in the general Chemistry sequence. The hybrid course will also allow for future development sections of general Chemistry with a particular topical focus (energy, health sciences, materials, etc).
