STEP 6. Conducting CATs

For a formative evaluation or to gain insight, the CAT may only need to be administered once during or after the instructional activity. To assess changes or measure effects, instructors will need to administer the CAT prior to and after the instructional activity using a single-group experimental design. It is also recommended that you do the following:

1. Inform students beforehand what you are going to do and why you are doing it.
2. Assure students that the exercise will not be graded or given points.
3. Make the exercise anonymous.
4. Clearly explain the procedure for completing the exercise. Writing the steps on the chalkboard or displaying them using a projection
   device is helpful.
5. Inform students as to how much time they will have to complete the exercise.
6. Collect student responses.
