FAQs

What if I can’t get the camera or the microphones to work while I am shooting?

You should take your handouts from the workshops with you when you shoot.  They contain helpful troubleshooting tips.  If you are unable to correct the problem, you should refer to the manual in the camera bag.

Always make sure the cords are plugged in correctly and that there are working batteries in the wireless microphones.  Go through the steps of setting up the camera again; you might have forgotten to do something.

If you are still having problems, make an appointment with an instructor.

Do I need my own batteries?

The cameras come equipped with rechargeable batteries, but you do need your own batteries for the wireless microphones. You'll need two AA batteries: one for the transmitter and one for the receiver.

Do I need to charge the camera battery?

It's always a good idea to fully charge the camera battery before your shoot.

Do I have to do my work in the lab?

No -- if you have access to the equipment or software, you may work outside the lab.  However, if you run into a problem, you will be able to find help in the DIIA multimedia lab.

Where can I store my files?

The editing stations do not allow for file storage, so each course will have an assigned space on a portable drive for students to store project files. You can also bring you own portable hard drives to store project files.

I have a 20 GB hard drive. Will it be big enough to store my files?

Keep in mind that five minutes of digital video equals 5 MB of storage space.  So, you could store about 20,000 minutes on a 20 GB hard drive.

I need help with my project; what should I do?

There may be an instructor available to help you, but call the lab first to make sure someone is around. You can also call the lab to schedule an appointment with a GRA.

I have a question that's not answered here. Whom can I contact?
