History of the GSI Program

When it began in 1989 the TA Program's primary function, as part of the Center for Teaching Effectiveness was to conduct workshops for 398T classes. In addition, staff conducted individual consultations. In the spring of 2001, the program expanded to include semester seminars, one in the fall for new TAs and one in the spring for experienced TAs and AIs. In 2004, the Program began to operate directly under the Director of the Division of Instructional Innovation and Assessment with support from the Office of Graduate Studies.  As part of this new association, the program was renamed the Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) Program and among other change efforts, is redesigning its web site, offering a certificate program through expanded semester workshops, and enhancing its seminars.
