2003 Judge BiographiesMatthew Bailey Matthew Bailey, associate professor of Spanish at The University of Texas at Austin, has published The Poema del Cid and the Poema de Fernán González: The Transformation of an Epic Tradition (Madison: HSMS, 1993), and edited Las Mocedades de Rodrigo: estudios críticos, manuscrito y edición (King’s College London, 1999). His Web site on the Cantar de Mio Cid is at www.lamc.utexas.edu/cid. It was a 2002 IITAP award-winner, receiving the top award for most innovative project. Judith Boettcher is a consultant and author in designing for learning, faculty development, and future trends of uses of technology. Judith was the executive director of CREN from 1997-2003. CREN was a non-profit higher education member organization that founded Bitnet in 1981 and provided IT Knowledge Services and Certificate Authority services supporting research and educational institutions. She served as program director and cohost of CREN TechTalks series, the first audio webcasts, launched in 1997 under her direction. Judith is active in national professional organizations, having served on conference planning committees for EUIT, Syllabus, as a member of the Board of Directors of Seminars on Academic Computing, a member of the ACTL committee for EDUCAUSE, and as a conference chair for Syllabus. She is a Syllabus Scholar and regularly writes columns for the Syllabus magazine and conducts workshops on designing and planning online and distance learning. Judith has a Ph.D. in education and cognitive psychology from the University of Minnesota and a Master’s degree in English from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Patrick Davis is a professor of medicinal chemistry and associate dean for Academic Affairs for the College of Pharmacy. He has been on the faculty at UT Austin for twenty-five years. Dr. Davis is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, and uses technology extensively in his classroom and laboratory teaching, which includes drug metabolism, antibiotics, and infectious diseases. With support through CIT's ~FAST Tex program, he has recently developed an innovative set of chemically-based flash animations to facilitate student understanding of drug metabolism processes. Joan Huntley is currently coordinator of new technologies in the Henry B. Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa, where she has worked for the past five years. She formerly directed the Stead Advanced Learning Technologies Center in the college. Prior to this she worked in the University of Iowa Information Technology Services where she held a number of positions including Group Leader, Market Analysis and Services Development, and Director, Second Look Computing. She is an author, program developer, and state- and national-level consultant,l and recently served as the chair of the board of directors for the international New Media Centers. She earned her B.A. in English from National Louis University and her Ph.D. in Instructional Design from the University of Iowa. Orlando R. Kelm (Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley, 1989) is associate professor of Hispanic linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The University of Texas at Austin. His professional interests include language for special purposes, such as Business Spanish and Business Portuguese and computer-assisted language instruction. He currently serves as the associate director of business language programs for the Center for International Business Education and Research at UT Austin. He also serves as the coordinator of lower-division instruction in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. John Wheat is the assistant vice president for technology in the Office of Resource Development at UT Austin where he has overall responsibility for information technology (IT) planning for the Office. He is also a member of the leadership team for the Knowledge Gateway project, and co-chairman of the campus-wide e-University Steering Committee. Previously, John was one of the authors of UT's 1998 Long Range Plan for Information Technology, and a co-founder of TeamWeb, UT Austin's original campus-wide webmaster support group. John has over twenty years of experience in the design, development, and integration of IT applications ranging from enterprise-scale business systems to e-commerce Web services and interactive multimedia projects. He was graduated from UT Austin with High Honors in 1975 and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
