Web-Enabled Tools for Research and the Classroom

The College of Communication treats us to a three-part presentation.

Journalism Online Tool (JOT) and the graduate online publication FLOW

Journalism Online Tool (JOT) is a tool for producing and managing online publications and other dynamic Web content with a novel approach to reviewing and site building. PHP Surveyor Tool Insights

Several surveys during fall 2004 served as terrific trials for the PHP Surveyor Tool.

  • learning how to use the tool in general
  • discovering bugs, and finding workarounds and caveats of the tool
  • developing a workflow for conducting surveys, from initial design to providing result data to the client.

George Sylvie put the service to the test with his 2005 Editors’ Decision-Making Survey. The pivotal question in this survey required the Q-Sort technique, requiring customization to implement this behavior. Resources for this project included the IDG webserver, PHP development, and IT consultation.

Classroom Experience Archive

Valuable time and effort can be wasted on video production.  Our goals are to securely capture, archive and retrieve digital content with minimal production and administrative costs.  The Classroom Experience Archive is a digital capture, encoding and delivery system which allows every lecture, student presentation and symposium to be captured in digital format for later editing or review.  It is an innovative use of technology that replaces time consuming production processes, enabling us to capture far more events with minimal effort.

Flash, XML, and Web Standards

ITS Enterprise Information Services treats us to a three-part presentation.

Honey, We Shrunk UT Direct

Find out how Web standards and CSS helped us reduce the UT Direct footprint while adding more functionality. The new version of UT Direct uses significantly fewer graphics, and the amount of code was reduced by over a third. Take a peek behind the scenes of the new version and learn how these techniques can be applied in other projects.
