Two DIIA Staffers to Present at AERA

DIIA's Marilla Svinicki and Dawn Zimmaro both gave presentations at the 2004 Annual Meeting of AERA, the American Educational Research Association, held April 12-16 in San Diego, California. The AERA meeting theme this year is "Enhancing the Visibility and Credibility of Educational Research." Marilla Svinicki, the director of DIIA's Center for Teaching Effectiveness presented her paper on "Metacognition, Self-Regulation and Strategic Learning in the Legacy Cycle: An Exploratory Study." She has also co-authored several more papers presented at the symposium.

Dawn Zimmaro, a research associate with DIIA's Measurement and Evaluation Center, presented from her dissertation research concerning unproctored placement testing entitled "Systemic Validity of Unproctored Online Mathematics Placement Testing."

Both Marilla and Dawn have been to AERA previously and consider the conference a great opportunity for professional growth; they welcome the variety of sessions available. This year's presentations vary from "Advanced Technologies for Learning" to "Wholistic Education." The range of offerings allows educators to fully explore trends in educational research.

Interviewed before the conference, they discussed the advantages of attending. "Many of the sessions we will be attending are fresh research topics that would normally take one to two years to be published. We are fortunate to present our research and attend this annual meeting as we get a chance to solicit advice about our challenges and receive immediate feedback," Marilla explained. "Much of what we learn we will apply to our research here at UT Austin," said Dawn. "The conference is invaluable to our professional development."

Along with Dawn and Marilla, three other DIIA staff members attended the AERA conference: Susanna Herndon, interim director of the Center for Instructional Technologies, Chuck Gaede, the interim director of the Measurement and Evaluation Center and Connie Williams, the supervisor of testing programs for the MEC. Connie is the current Secretary/Newsletter Editor for the Measurement Services Special Interest Group (SIG) within AERA and Chuck has held every office within the Measurement Services (SIG) over the past 10 years.
