Marilla Svinicki Receives Inaugural Burnt Orange Apple Award

Large Classroom Colloquium with Sheldon Ekland-Olson `Dr. Marilla Svinicki, right, was presented with the inaugural "Marilla D. Svinicki Burnt Orange Apple Award" at a reception honoring her service to teaching excellence at UT Austin, as well as nationally and internationally. The event, jointly sponsored by DIIA and the College of Education's Department of Educational Psychology, took place on September 1 at the Littlefield House with many DIIA staff members and UT Austin faculty in attendance. Judy Ashcroft (shown on left), the director of DIIA, Karron Lewis, associate director of DIIA's Center for Teaching Excellence, and Susan Kessler, associate director of the Texas Exes, presented the award.

The award is an outgrowth of the Burnt Orange Apple Seed Fund, and Dr. Svinicki was doubly honored—and surprised at the event—by having the award named for her. Dr. Svinicki initiated the idea of the Fund as a way for current or ex- UT Austin students to recognize faculty whose teaching has had a positive impact on their lives, and to attract funds to support UT Austin's teaching effectiveness programs. The award is a joint effort between students and administrators to ensure the highest quality of academic instruction possible at The University of Texas at Austin, and is co-sponsored by the Texas Exes Association. The Texas Exes Association named the “Burnt Orange Apple Award” one of their Top Ten Best Ideas of the Year in The Alcalde magazine.

By helping to raise money for the Apple Seed Fund, students have the opportunity to show their appreciation for their teachers while contributing to programs that will sustain and improve the quality of a UT Austin education. Additional information about how to participate in this program will be forthcoming.
