Liz Alexander Elected 2005-06 SERA RepresentativeLiz Alexander, a member of DIIA’s Graduate Student Instructor Program staff, was elected as the Southwest Educational Research Association (SERA) 2005-06 graduate student representative during its recent conference in New Orleans. SERA is the regional division of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). The 2006 SERA conference will be held in Austin, and one of Liz’s key responsibilities will be to mount a ninety-minute symposium. She plans to focus on how graduate students can help promote teaching excellence with respect to conducting research. Liz will survey the SERA graduate student membership, brainstorm with board members and faculty to identify the most egregious issues surrounding current research practices relating to graduate students, and formulate ways to address these problems. Working from the results of her research, she will tap into the talents of SERA members to craft the symposium. Liz stressed that she was elected on a pedagogical ticket, and was able to confidently promise that with her DIIA and GSI experience and skills she can deliver meaningful faculty development programming for the association.
