DIIA Summer Testing Services for Incoming Freshmen a Well-Oiled Machine
Amidst the crowd of incoming students and parents at Summer Freshman Orientation in the Jester Center exists an oasis where DIIA’s Testing Services staff coolly and competently provide and coordinate pre-registration testing services. Under the leadership of Dr. Connie Williams, the Testing Services staff, supplemented by extra summer workers and assisted by University New Student Services, guide new students through the advising, registration, administration, and scoring process. These tests help determine correct placement in foreign language, math, chemistry, computer proficiency, and writing classes. The testing process is completed in time for the new students to register for classes just two days later, while they are still on campus. There are ten orientation periods this summer, and Williams called on supplemental staff from both the University and the community to meet this challenge. Her pool of qualified temporary testing staff is made up of graduate students from Educational Psychology and other campus departments, as well as current and retired teachers.
