Thank a Teacher Campaign Kick-off March 28The Thank a Teacher program is a collaborative effort on the part of UT students, staff, and administrators to recognize high caliber instruction at UT Austin. By helping to raise money for the Burnt Orange Apple Seed Fund, students have the opportunity to show their appreciation for teachers who have made a significant impact in their lives. Proceeds from the program will be divided between the SCC and DIIA to fund teaching initiatives. To participate, anyone may donate any amount to the Apple Seed fund, and receive a specially designed card to present to the teacher they wish to honor. Senate representatives will accept donations at Thank a Teacher tables located on the West Mall and in the various academic colleges across campus throughout Faculty Appreciation Week. The exemplary teachers recognized through this program will appear on the Apple Seed Honor Roll. Candace Chui, Faculty Appreciation Week Chair, and Kate Nanney, Faculty Relations Director, met with DIIA Director Judy Ashcroft to outline strategy to ensure a successful campaign. Claudia Snowden, DIIA liaison for the Thank a Teacher program stresses the importance of the synergy among students, faculty, administration, and staff: “Candace and Kate understand the connection between faculty development and enriching the educational experience for not only students and faculty, but staff and administration as well here at UT Austin. They have the vision, the creativity, and the work ethic to make this a model program. We are delighted that DIIA has the opportunity to work with such outstanding students and student organizations.” Dr. Marilla Svinicki, former director of the Center for Teaching Effectiveness, brought the idea to the Senate of College Councils to help produce the cards and promote the program. Rusty Ince, 2003-04 chair of the SCC, welcomed the idea. “Claudia and Marilla were great resources to get this program running. The DIIA is very student-friendly, especially at a research university. Students are excited about improving and impacting teaching at UT Austin,” said Rusty. For more information, contact Claudia Snowden at 232-1770, and visit the Senate of College Councils Web site.
