GSI Colloquium Adds New Feature For 2006DIIA’s Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) Program will hold the third annual colloquium for graduate students on Saturday, September 16, 2006. This one-day, free event helps graduate students build instructional skills, and introduces GSIs to expectations for teaching at UT Austin. The emphasis this year is “Reflecting: Using Discussion, Writing, and Technology to Encourage Student-Centered Learning.” As a new feature this year, the GSI Colloquium invites students to submit proposals for sessions to be presented in the colloquium that feature research, best practices, and hands-on workshops using the latest appropriate teaching techniques in their field of study. Submissions are competitive, and will be judged based on criteria that measure exemplary teaching in the UT classroom. Having a proposal accepted to a juried colloquium can be a valuable addition to a graduate student’s vita or professional portfolio. All graduate students are encouraged to respond to the call for proposals and to participate. The call for proposals will be of particular interest to post-doctoral candidates who have had more extensive teaching experience, and to GSIs who can share promising practices from their practical knowledge in the UT classroom.
