Executive Vice President and Provost

Dee Silverthorn garners Burnt Orange Apple Award for outstanding teaching

Section Chair of Integrative Biology Dr. Bob Jansen, Dr. Dee Silverthorn, Dr. Judy Ashcroft, and Dr. Stephen Monti.

Dr. Svinicki congratulates Dr. Silverthorn on her receiving the Marilla D. Svinicki Burnt Orange Apple Award.

Dee U. Silverthorn, senior lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences, has been presented the Marilla D. Svinicki Burnt Orange Apple Award in recognition of her leadership in advancing teaching and learning and her commitment to UT Austin students. The award was initiated by Dr. Svinicki, a professor in educational psychology, to recognize faculty members whose teaching has positively impacted the lives of their students.

Recipients of the Burnt Orange Apple Award have provided lively and memorable learning experiences for their students, as suggested by six rigorous selection criteria:

  • 10 years of service to UT Austin
  • profound commitment to student learning
  • demonstrated leadership in advancing teaching and learning through scholarship, presentation, and collegial collaboration
  • respect for students and what they bring to the learning environment.
  • development of innovative teaching methods or materials
  • use of alternative or creative teaching and assessment methods to serve students with diverse learning styles

Executive Vice President and Provost Stephen Monti and Associate Vice President and DIIA Director Judy Ashcroft presented the award. Dr. Ashcroft recognized Dr. Silverthorn as a faculty member who demonstrates a strong passion for teaching and learning saying, “The first Burnt Orange Apple Award was given to Dr. Marilla Svinicki as she was moving from being a charter member of DIIA to the College of Education. Thus, the bar was set high. We are delighted to present the 2006 award to Dr. Dee Silverthorn, who meets and exceeds not only the criteria but the expectations of her peers and students.”
