Workshops to Offer Hands-On Training in Using Grading Tools and Designing Improvement PlansA week of interactive workshops beginning November 26 will kick off DIIA’s new series of regular assessment tutorials, with two offerings each on two topics. In workshop 1—Developing and Applying Tools: Rubrics and Exam Questions—instructors looking to use better assessment practices to support students’ learning will practice approaches to designing sound and powerful grading methods. In workshop 2—Using Assessment Results to Drive Improvement—faculty and staff interested in better managerial approaches to instructional design and delivery will learn how to use assessment outcomes to improve organizational processes. Responses to DIIA’s poll of degree-granting entities in UT Austin’s Online Assessment Tracking System (OATS) have indicated great interest in these topics as departments, schools, and centers work to develop comprehensive assessment plans in response to the charge of vice provost Neal Armstrong, UT Austin’s SACS liaison. Participants in workshop 1 will learn how to identify appropriate assessment methods, design scoring rubrics, and write reliable and valid exam questions. Participants in workshop 2 will learn how to derive insight from assessment results in addressing structures and processes critical to program improvement. The workshops complement DIIA’s Instructional Assessment Resources (IAR) Web site, which contains step-by-step explanations of the essentials of the assessment process—planning, data gathering, reporting of results—with focus on methods, real-world examples, and instructional tools, tables, and worksheets. DIIA invites faculty and staff members to attend either or both workshops, each to be offered twice during the week following the Thanksgiving break, in Gebauer 3.312.
