DIIA Team Delivers Encore DMS Presentation at Campus Technology Winter Conference

A team of DIIA digital media specialists was invited to make a poster presentation at the winter Campus Technology conference in San Francisco, to share details and results of the evaluation of Digital Media Service’s (DMS) year-long pilot program to encourage faculty to use multimedia technologies. Following up on a DIIA panel presentation about DMS at last summer’s annual conference in Washington, D.C., the poster was the result of a collaboration among Susanna Wong Herndon, associate director for teaching-enhanced learning, media specialist Lucas Horton, and research associate Tomoko Traphagan.

The theme of the three-day conference was delivering solutions for an institutional edge and for personal career growth, featuring eight immersive workshop topics: business intelligence, academic collaboration, assessment, globalization, IT leadership, security, eLearning, and technology for teaching and learning. The DIIA poster focused on how the evaluation of the DMS pilot program integrated the division’s three core functions of promoting sound pedagogy, integrating instructional technology, and performing ongoing assessment. By incorporating the diverse perspectives provided by several assessment tools, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, and logs, the DMS evaluation was—and will continue to be—integrated, cyclical, incremental, and staff empowering.

The evaluation of the pilot program revealed two encouraging trends: general student satisfaction with the role of DMS in their courses and with the support and service provided by DMS staff. Study recommendations for increased staffing and equipment to support expanded student training reflect the momentum achieved by the pilot initiative.
