Hardware and Software for Podcasting

There is no one combination of hardware and software required to create a podcast. We have, however, had success using the products listed here.

Estimated costs before tax are incidated as no cost (free), $ (up to $20), $$ (between $20 and $100), or $$$ (over $100).


Hardware

Most of the hardware listed here can be purchased through the Campus Computer Store or directly from the manufacturer.

Audio recorders

A device for recording audio information, it may or may not have a built-in microphone.

Griffin iTalk Pro voice recorder
This removable voice recorder add-on for select iPod models contains a built-in microphone, or it can be connected to an external microphone. A built-in speaker allows you to listen to recordings on your iPod.

Portable MP3 players

While a portable MP3 player is not necessary to listen to or create podcasts, it is a popular mobile device for listening to digital audio.

Audio editing

Capture digital audio samples, subject to fair use principles, from streaming Web sources, CDs, DVDs, or other software applications to include in your educational podcast.

Free, open source audio recording and editing software available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

Podcatchers (feed aggregators)

Add a feed to your list of subscriptions with a podcatcher, whose software can be configured to check the publisher's feed regularly for updates.

Digital media player software, available for Mac and Windows, used for playing, organizing, and purchasing digital music, video, audiobooks, and podcasts. The software interface for iPod.

XML editors
