Hands-on technology workshops are held in either the DIIA Multimedia lab (GSB 2.130) or FAC 101B. Registration is open to University of Texas at Austin faculty and staff only.

Getting Started with Blackboard

Blackboard enables educators to enhance in-class instruction by providing 24/7 access to course materials along with a variety of tools that can assist instructors with the management of their courses. In this hands-on session, you will learn how to build a Blackboard course site by uploading course documents, organizing material, and applying course designs to your site.

In this session we will discuss:

  • Adding files to a course site
  • Managing material using folders
  • Adding web resources to a course site
  • Customizing a course menu
  • Applying unique design to a course site
  • Managing students and Teaching Assistants
  • Managing the Gradebook

This hands-on session will focus on the effective uses of Blackboard's communication tools to connect instructors with students outside the classroom. We will discuss how to use, facilitate, and manage these tools to elevate class communication online.

Teaching with PowerPoint

PowerPoint has become the standard presentation software used at UT Austin. Unfortunately, students often view PowerPoint presentations as boring and accuse some teachers of becoming note-dependent while using it. This session will demonstrate the effective use of PowerPoint and will provide techniques for you to increase student participation, gain attention of students, and branch PowerPoint presentations to enable student interaction.

Increasing Feedback with Blackboard

This hands-on session will teach you how to use Blackboard's assessment features to evaluate student learning and to gain valuable feedback from your students. We will demonstrate the process of creating quizzes/surveys, using the gradebook, and collecting assignments through Blackboard.

Ongoing Course Assessment

Ongoing Course Assessment is a tool created within UT Austin, for instructors to use to get anonymous feedback from students about the class. Instructors can design their own questionnaires or choose questionnaires that are already created and ready to use. Surveys can be sent out at any time during the semester, and responses can be downloaded to Excel or Word.

Classroom Performance System (CPS)

These workshops will highlight the features and benefits of using an electronic response system in the classroom, designed to promote classroom attendance and participation, engage students' attention, and make instructors and students more aware of the comprehension level of the class. Responses are tallied instantly from students' remote control devices for on-the-spot feedback, or later for other purposes.

Classroom Performance System (CPS):  Beyond the Basics

The Classroom Response Systems can be used to administer multiple versions of tests, display questions with graphics, engage students in competitive group activities, create student handouts from CRS questions and output a variety of reports. Student responses can be exported into Blackboard, eGradebook and the Homework Service. The software now has data slicing capabilities which can be used both in the classroom and for research. This workshop will teach instructors to move beyond the basics and discover additional functions that supplement the "Verbal Mode".
