The Office of Information Management and Analysis staff regularly review on-line and printed materials dealing with higher education, institutional research, and the University of Texas at Austin. These links will be brought together at this site to facilitate users' ability to keep abreast of what is happening without everyone having to do individual scanning.

* Environmental scanning started out in the business world as gathering information from the environment in order “to better achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. To sustain competitive advantage the company must also respond to the information gathered from environmental scanning by altering its strategies and plans when the need arises.” (Wikipedia). IMA is using environmental scanning to keep abreast of what is happening in the world of higher education in order to assess the impact on UT Austin. While not all of our environmental scanning will result in a formal response (looking at threats and opportunities in terms of their potential impact and likeliness of occurring), knowing what is going on out there, especially what is on the horizon, will help IMA and UT Austin to be better positioned to achieve our goal of becoming a world-class institution.
