HOW TO APPLY
We receive hundreds
of applications each year for fall admission to our MFA program.
It is essential that you follow all application guidelines
to ensure that your file is reviewed.
Please be aware that you will submit
materials to two separate offices at UT: the Graduate and
International Admissions office (GIAC) and the Michener Center
for Writers (MCW). The next two sections will explain what
must be sent where, and how.
December
15 is the postmark deadline and the electronic
submission deadline for all materials.
You must meet the Graduate School's
minimum standards as far as degree requirements, GPA, and
GRE scores.
Those who hold an MFA or PhD degree
in creative writing, in any genre from any institution, or
an MA in creative writing from UT Austin are not eligible
for our MFA program. Those with MAs in creative writing from
other institutions are considered on an ad hoc basis.
We admit ten to twelve students per
year, which means that our current acceptance rate is less
than 2% in fiction and between 4% and 6% for the other genres.
We only accept full-time,
in residence candidates for our three-year program. There
is no low-residency or part-time option.
