Our goal in the poetry workshop is simple: that students feel at least as excited about poetry leaving it as they do going in, hopefully more so. That calls for an intelligently engaged and ambitious criticism that starts with a generous reading of each poem and respect for what may be an approach and intention very different from our own. Aesthetic diversity is to be welcomed and encouraged even within a single poet’s work. All of us are lucky to be in a room of people who take this art seriously, have given so much of themselves to it, and I, personally, am lucky to see before me the future of poetry in the making.
