COURSE PLACEMENT AND CREDIT
BY EXAMINATION
- The University affords students the opportunity to demonstrate that
their knowledge is equivalent to that of students who complete a UT
Austin course with a grade of C or higher. The University permits
students to apply to take an examination in any undergraduate course.
Credit earned by examination satisfies degree requirements in the
same way as credit earned by passing a course, except that it does
not count as credit earned in residence. UT Austin uses the results
from many standardized and departmentally constructed tests in this
program.
- Many high school students who have attained college level proficiency
use the credit by examination program to earn credit for introductory
courses that would be repetitious for them. Other students view credit
by examination as an incentive for independent study.
- In addition to awarding credit by examination, some departments
use test results to place a student in the course most appropriate
for his/her level of proficiency. Such placement tests are required
before students can continue study in certain subjects.
