COMPUTER PROFICIENCY TEST

Policies Effective for the Academic Year 2008-2009*

*This is to be used as a guide only. Policies are subject to change.

In order to register for MIS 301, the business core courses and some business electives, you must have a satisfactory score on the Computer Proficiency Test. Students with transfer credit for MIS 301, or its equivalent, are not required to take the Computer Proficiency Test.  The test does not serve as a basis for course credit.

How the Test Is Scored: 
The School of Business requires the Computer Proficiency Test for any student enrolling in MIS 301.  Basic skills in Office applications: Word, PowerPoint, and Excel will be tested. Satisfactory performance will be required to register for MIS 301, and take business core courses or electives. Study aids will be available to review the skills.There are 38 questions in total across the three skill areas. Satisfactory performance is at least 31 questions correct (79% or better). You will be given 45 minutes to complete the test.

Test Topics:

Word Topics:The following Word skills will be tested on the exam:Applying and modifying column settings, text formats, bullet, outline and number format to paragraphs, headers and footers, tables, date and time, document layout, page setup, and paragraph format; correcting spelling and grammar; inserting and moving text and symbols; previewing and printing documents; and saving documents.

PowerPoint Topics:The following PowerPoint skills will be tested on the exam:Adding and deleting slides; adding tables, charts, clip art and bitmap images to slides; creating presentations manually and using automated tools; inserting, formatting and modifying text, headers and footers, templates and slide layout; previewing and printing slides, outlines, handouts and speaker notes; and rearranging slides.

Excel Topics:The following Excel skills will be tested on the exam:applying and modifying cell formats; modifying row and column settings; creating and revising formulas; and managing workbook files and folders.

TEST ADMINISTRATION

Test Periods: The test is offered monthly on the UT Austin campus.

Test Registration: You must register for a test online.

Test Registration for Students with Disabilities: If you require academic accommodations or assistance due to a documented disability, you should contact these two offices at least five business days before the day of the test:

  • Services for Students with Disabilities, in the Office of the Dean of Students at ssd@uts.cc.utexas.edu,  http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/ssd/, or (512) 471-6259 to seek approval for authorized accommodations;

  • DIIA-Student Testing Services at (512) 232-2662 to register and make arrangements to take the test.

Registration Fee and Test Fee Payment: The total test fee is $45 (subject to change). When you confirm your registration for a test you will be immediately billed a non-refundable test registration fee of $15. The remainder of the test fee will be billed after you take the test. Payment is due within 14 days after the test administration. 

Admission to the Test Room: At the test room you must present a generally accepted form of identification that includes both your signature and a photograph. Without such identification, you will be admitted only if you bring and relinquish a photograph of yourself.

Test Results: Results are available on the computer screen at the end of your testing session.
