PLACEMENT AND CREDIT BY EXAMINATION IN MATHEMATICS 305G

Policies Effective for the Academic Year 2009-2010*

*This is to be used as a guide only. Policies are subject to change.

UT Austin provides you with the opportunity to earn course credit by examination. Such credit will satisfy degree requirements in the same way as credit earned by passing a course, except that it will not count as credit earned in residence. Although you may take tests before you enroll in UT Austin, you must be a currently or previously enrolled student in order to receive credit. Unsuccessful attempts to earn credit by examination will not become part of your official transcript.

Faculty members in the Department of Mathematics select the tests, set the levels of performance required for credit, and specify who is eligible to take the tests. DIIA-Student Testing Services assists the department by communicating policies, giving the tests, and reporting the credit.

TESTS USED BY UT AUSTIN

Students who wish to attempt to earn credit by examination in Math 305G have the following option:

  • The College Board (CB) SAT Subject Test in Mathematics Level 1 or Level 2.

If you have a grade or grade symbol (CR) for M305G or an equivalent course, you may take the test to satisfy a prerequisite, but you may not use the score to earn credit for M305G.

A TEST IS REQUIRED TO REGISTER FOR MOST LOWER-DIVISION MATHEMATICS COURSES
Most entry-level mathematics courses have as a prerequisite either a minimum satisfactory score on a mathematics test used by UT Austin or credit for a specific college mathematics course with a minimum satisfactory grade. Course prerequisites are listed in the official Course Schedule for each semester and summer session. Note that these prerequisites are strictly enforced and can be modified only by the Mathematics Department Undergraduate Adviser.

ELIGIBILITY FOR CREDIT BY EXAMINATION IN M305G
To be eligible to earn credit for M 305G, you must meet these requirements:

  1. You must have a satisfactory mathematics score. Refer to the table in this handout.
  2. You must not have a grade or grade symbol (CR, X ) for M 305G or an equivalent course. Credit for M 305G may not be earned after a student has received credit for any calculus course with a grade of C or better. This requirement does not apply to calculus credit earned by examination. For example, if you take a test and thereby earn calculus credit, you may subsequently take one of the tests for M 305G and earn credit.

College Board Test Centers

  • These centers are usually in high schools. Test dates are usually in October, November, December, January, May, and June of each year. Advance registration with The College Board is required. The national test schedule for the SAT Subject Test in Mathematics Level 1 is available http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/calenfees.html.
  • Test scores from College Board nationwide administrations are available about four weeks after the test date.
  • The College Board Bulletin for the SAT Program, which includes a list of test centers and a registration form, is available without charge at most high schools or from The College Board ATP, Box 6200, Princeton, NJ 08541. • For tests taken on the UT Austin campus, the score report will give your test score, and any credit you may have earned. It can be used to receive credit or to satisfy a computer check of course prerequisites. Scores from UT Austin campus administrations reflect the same level of performance as do scores from College Board administrations.

Placement Information: Placement in Entry-Level Mathematics Courses, will help you determine which courses are appropriate for you to take.
