PLACEMENT AND CREDIT BY EXAMINATION IN VIETNAMESE
*Policies Effective 2008-2009
*This is to be used as a guide only. Policies are subject to change.
UT Austin provides you with the opportunity to earn course credit by examination. Such credit will satisfy degree requirements in the same way as credit earned by passing a course, except that it will not count as credit earned in residence. Although you may take tests before you enroll in UT Austin, you must be a currently or previously enrolled student in order to receive credit. Unsuccessful attempts to earn credit by examination will not become part of your official transcript.
Faculty members in the Department of Asian Studies select the tests, set the levels of performance required for credit, and specify who is eligible to earn credit by examination. DIIA-Student Testing Services assists the department by communicating policies, giving the tests, and reporting the credit.
UT AUSTIN TEST FOR CREDIT IN VIETNAMESE
Lower-division courses in Vietnamese are at four levels as indicated below:
Level 1: VTN 506 (first year Vietnamese I)
NOTE: VTN 604 and 506 may not both be counted.
Level 2: VTN 507 (first year Vietnamese II)
NOTE: 604 and 507 may not both be counted.
Level 3: VTN 412K (second year Vietnamese I)
NOTE: VTN 612 and 412K may not both be counted.
Level 4: VTN 412L (second year Vietnamese II)
NOTE: VTN 612 and 412L may not both be counted.
Results of the UT Austin Test for Credit in Vietnamese are used to place students in UT Austin Vietnamese courses appropriate for their particular levels of proficiency. Test results also serve as a basis for awarding credit in one to four Vietnamese courses—VTN 506, 507, 412K, and 412L.
Students for Whom the Placement Test Is Required or Appropriate
Students who have prior knowledge of Vietnamese (regardless of how it was acquired) and who do not have college credit in Vietnamese must take the UT Austin Test for Credit in Vietnamese before they can enroll in their first UT Austin Vietnamese course. The UT Austin Test for Credit in Vietnamese is offered only on the UT Austin campus, at regularly scheduled times.
Students transferring college credit in Vietnamese are not required, but are strongly encouraged, to take this placement test and to use the results to help them choose their first course in Vietnamese at UT Austin. Transfer students may also use the placement test to earn additional credit in Vietnamese or to earn credit for lower-division courses from which they were exempted without credit at another institution. In no way will Vietnamese credit already earned be jeopardized by the results of this test.
Students who do not intend to enroll in a Vietnamese course but who wish to attempt to earn credit by examination may also take the placement test.
Eligibility for Credit by Examination in Vietnamese
You are eligible for credit only in those courses for which you do not have a passing or failing grade. In addition, if you have been enrolled in a Vietnamese course for as long as the date on which the official enrollment count is taken (twelfth class day for long semesters and fourth class day for summer sessions), then you cannot receive credit by examination for that course.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS
Q. What should I do if I think that my test results place me at a course level that is too advanced?
A. The primary purpose of the UT Austin Test for Credit in Vietnamese is to place students in the UT Austin Vietnamese courses that are best suited for them—neither too easy nor too difficult. If you think that you are placed incorrectly, you should consult your instructor or an undergraduate adviser in the Department of Asian Studies.
Q. If I earn credit by examination in Vietnamese, must I then enroll in a UT Austin Vietnamese course in order to receive credit earned by examination?
A. No. The credit earned by examination is yours—regardless of whether or not you enroll in subsequent Vietnamese courses. Many degree programs require a specific level of proficiency in at least one foreign language, so your decision about enrolling in additional courses may be influenced by your degree requirements.
CLAIMING CREDIT
No credit by examination will appear on your official transcript
until you instruct DIIA to report it to the registrar. To have credit
reported, you must claim your credit by logging onto the DIIA-Student
Testing Services Web site at www.utexas.edu/academic/mec.
You will be assessed a fee of $4 per credit hour for the credit
by examination you request to be reported to the Office of the Registrar.
The Web site gives a full explanation on how to petition and pay
for credit. Although you may petition as soon as you are admitted
as a student at UT Austin, your course credit will not be recorded
until after you have started classes at UT Austin. After you have
begun attending classes at UT Austin, you may then petition at any
time during your studies here. To have credit recorded at the end
of a particular semester, you must petition by that semester's final
petition deadline, which is available from the DIIA-Student Testing
Services Web page. If you take a course for which you have earned
credit by examination prior to petitioning for that specific course,
you are no longer eligible for credit by examination in that course.
You must petition for your credit by examination within 10 years
from the test date.
