UT Austin - Statistical Handbook 2001 - 2002
General Analysis - Faculty/Staff
For the academic year 2001-02, departmental appointed full-time equivalent faculty increased by 4% and teaching staff by slightly less than 1% over figures for 2000-01 (Tables FS 1 and 2).
Table FS 3 shows that in 2001-02 UT Austin's average faculty salaries (first four ranks) continued to increase as a result of President Faulkner's initiatives, even though no funds were provided by the Legislature for faculty salary increases. Figure FS 4 compares UT Austin's faculty salaries with average salaries from our national comparison group of institutions. For 2000-01, UT Austinšs average faculty salaries remained slightly below the weighted average for the rest of the institutions.
The percentage of tenured faculty for fall 2001 is 47.8%, slightly lower than last year's figure and continues the proportional decline of tenured faculty over the past ten years (Table FS 5).
The total number of teaching faculty increased by 2.8% (73), with female teaching staff increasing by 4.7% (40) and male teaching staff by 1.9% (33) (Table FS 6). Proportionally, Blacks represent 3.2% of the faculty in fall 2001, up from 2.9% the previous year. Hispanics make up 5.1% of the faculty and Asians 6.5%. The proportional representation of whites decreased slightly.
Student/faculty ratios declined slightly for 2001-02 (Table FS 9).
