General Analysis - Faculty/Staff

For the academic year 2002-03, departmental appointed full-time equivalent faculty increased by 3.4% over figures for 2001-02 (Table FS 1). Teaching staff for 2001-02 (the latest year’s data available) increased by 3.2% over 2000-01 (Table FS 2).

Table FS 3 shows that in 2002-03 UT Austin’s average faculty salaries (first four ranks) continued to increase as a result of President Faulkner’s initiatives. Figure FS 4 compares UT Austin’s faculty salaries with average salaries from our national comparison group of institutions. For 2001-02, UT Austin’s average faculty salaries remained slightly below the weighted average for the rest of the institutions.

The percentage of tenured faculty for fall 2002 is 47.5%, slightly lower than last year’s figure and continues the proportional decline of tenured faculty over the past ten years (Table FS 5).

The total number of teaching faculty increased by 2.3% (61), with female teaching staff increasing by 2.4% (22) and male teaching staff by 2.2% (39) (Table FS 6). Proportionally, Blacks represent 3.2% of the faculty in fall 2002 (same as last year), Hispanics 5.1%, and Asians 7.0%, up from 6.5% the previous year. The proportional representation of whites decreased slightly (Table FS 7).
