The University of Texas at Austin The Educational and General Funds budget for The University decreased by 2.5% from $569,629,668 in 2002-03 to $555,410,508 in 2003-04, primarily from decreases in the Available University Fund, General Revenue, and the state funded research programs. Instruction makes up the bulk of that budget (50.06%), followed by Staff Benefits (20.44%) and Operation and Maintenance of Plant (7.98%) (Table F 1). Liberal Arts receives 22.1% of the instruction budget allocations to colleges and schools, followed by Natural Sciences (21.9%) and Engineering (13.7%) (Figure F 4). The amount of contracts and grants awarded (not expended) in 2002-03 decreased by 0.3% from 2001-02 (2002-03 is the latest year’s data available). There were 2,494 contracts and grants awarded in 2002-03 (2,285 in 2001-02) for $381 million (Table F 5). The UT Austin Main Campus grew by 65,318 gross square feet (GSF) of space in 2003 (Figure F 6) and assignable square footage (ASF) by 41,115 square feet. In total, there are 16.1 million gross square feet of space and over 8.7 million assignable square feet of space on the Main Campus (Figure F 6), of which almost one-third is related to the delivery of instruction (Figure F 7).
