What should I do if I'm not exempt?

All students who are not exempt are required to take an approved test of basic skills in the area(s) for which they are not exempt before their first semester at the University. For example, if a student is exempt from the math TSI requirement, but not reading and writing, he or she must take only the reading and writing sections of an approved test.

There are four tests approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board: THEA, ASSET, COMPASS, and ACCUPLACER. UT Austin accepts all four tests, but encourages students to take THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment.)

If you attended a Texas public college for dual-credit while you were in high school or are transferring from a Texas public college, you may have been required to take one of the above tests.

Your scores should be listed on your college transcript. It is your responsibility to ask your college to send an official transcript to UT Austin. Official test scores also may be sent to:

We also accept faxed scores if they are sent directly from the college you attended. Our fax number is: 512-471-4990.

If you took THEA or Quick THEA (or TASP) and did not have the scores sent to UT Austin, let us know so we can retrieve the scores through National Evaluation Systems.
