Public education complements every other TDM strategy by creating a climate that fosters public acceptance and awareness of alternative transportation modes. It is a vital element of a TDM project. Public education campaigns coordinated by a variety of entities, both public and private, are ongoing in most major cities in the U.S. As examples, there are modes of information dissemination such as bike maps and bus schedules; marketing/campaign through the use of mass media; designation of Bike-to-Work Week, Ozone Action Day, Relax Statewide Transportation Choices campaign, Oil Smart campaign, Rideshare Week, One Less Car campaign, Walk to School days; and others. The Austin San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) has been in violation of Federal ozone standards since 1999. To meet the Federal standards, the City of Austin has developed strategies to minimize NOX emissions. One of the strategies is to educate the public to promote behavior changes such as promoting alternative commute modes (bicycling, transit, vanpooling, AFVs hybrid vehicles etc). As part of the strategy, City of Austin partnered with CLEAN AIR Force and Clear Channel communications and spear headed $550,000 in regional outreach campaign. COA also organizes commute solutions Fairs and promoted alternative transportation through City and regional outreach.
