16.5.6.7 FABRICATION / CANNIBALIZATION OF EQUIPMENT Items fabricated by The University of Texas at Austin Applied Research Laboratories (ARL:UT) and categorized as accountable inventory will be reported to the Property Office so that property records can be established and the items identified with government identification tags. A report will be made listing any inventory item that will be incorporated into another piece of equipment, system, or fabrication, thereby losing its identity to a larger inventory end item (see The University of Texas Handbook of Business Procedures Part 16.5.3 E). Handbook of Business Procedures Part 16.5.3 E Government equipment will not be cannibalized without prior approval from Office of Naval Research Regional Office (ONRRO). Therefore, when it has been determined that an inventory item is no longer useful as an assembly or system but that its components could be utilized, the responsible division head or contract supervisor will request permission to cannibalize the item by submitting a memorandum to the Property Office. A letter will be submitted to the ONRRO for permission to remove the item from inventory for cannibalization and to add the accountable components to the inventory. Once the Property Office has received approval, the requester will be notified to proceed with cannibalization. Once the assembly or system has been cannibalized, the item will be reported to the Property Office, along with a complete list of removed components that are to be added to the inventory (see The University of Texas Handbook of Business Procedures Part 16.5.3 E). Any residual components will be disposed of in accordance with the property administrator's instruction. Office of Naval Research
