Frequently Asked Questions

How can I defer my loan?
Please visit our deferment page for details and the appropriate forms. The appropriate form can be downloaded from here.

I do not have my monthly statement. What should I do?
Send in your payment to our mailing address. Be sure to include your name as it appears on your loan and/or your student ID number or UTEID on your check.

Call our office to report an address change or a name change. It is your responsibility to keep our office updated on these changes. Payment must be made even if you did not receive a statement.

How do I know when to start making payments?
During the exit interview process you will be given your repayment information and the date you are scheduled to begin repayment. You may also call or write our office.

Generally, payments begin 9 months after your student deferment ends. Statements are mailed on the 17th of each month and payments are due on the 1st of the following month.

How do I change my address or my name?
For an address change, you may go to ROSE and change your addresses on line. We use the "local address" for your mailing address. You may use the payment coupon sent to you each month. Call, write, or email our office.

I have recently married. Do I need to change my last name with the University?
To change your name for mailing purposes only, write or email our office with the requested change. Be sure to include your student ID number or UTEID. This name change is not official and will not change your name on your academic records.

You must contact the Registrar's office (512-475-7644) if you wish to make an official name change on your academic records.

Has my loan been reported to a credit bureau?
Yes, we report all loan activity to 3 national credit bureaus monthly. These credit bureaus are: "

  • Trans Union 1-800-888-4213
  • CBI Equifax 1-770-740-4376
  • Experian 1-888-397-3742

Why is my loan considered to be in default?
According to the Education Department, default is defined as "the failure of a borrower to make an installment payment when due or to comply with other terms of the promissory note or written repayment agreement."

I will be returning to school soon. Do I still have to make the payment that is currently due?
Yes. You will have to make all payments due up to the effective date of your deferment. If you have a payment due August 1 and your deferment will begin September 1, you do have to make the payment due August 1. However, you do not have to make the payment due on September 1.

Do correspondence courses count for student deferment?
No. To be eligible for a student deferment, you must be physically attending classes.

Can my loan be deferred in advance?
No, any type of deferment cannot start before the actual benefit period. If you are attending school, you must wait until classes have started and your school will verify enrollment. Registration is not sufficient.

Why can't my parents or my spouse talk to you about my loans?
Due to the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), we cannot discuss any details about your loan without your written authorization. A form is provided for you to complete and return to our office.
