Exemptions

Fee exemptions are issued only for the period in which a student is currently enrolled; therefore, applications must be submitted no later than commencement day at the end of the spring semester or the official graduation date at the end of the summer session or fall semester, unless otherwise stated.


Accredited School Scholarship

Eligibility:
Highest ranking graduate of an accredited Texas high school

Exempted:
Tuition during first two semesters (long session) following graduation

Blind and Deaf Students

Eligibility:

  • Texas resident
  • A blind disabled person or a person whose sense of hearing is nonfunctional

Children of Disabled or Deceased Texas Firefighters and Peace Officers

Children under 21 years of age of disabled or deceased full-paid or volunteer firefighters; full-paid or volunteer municipal, county, or state peace officers; or custodians of the Department of Corrections, and game wardens

Children of Prisoners of War or Persons Missing in Action

Eligibility:
Dependent person under 25 years of age who receives majority of support from parent classified by Department of Defense as a Prisoner of War or Missing in Action at time of registration

Children of Professional Nurse Faculty and Staff

Eligibility:

  • Children of nursing faculty and staff
  • Must be a Texas resident and under 25 years old
  • Faculty and staff must hold RN licensure and be employed or under contract at the School of Nursing during all or part of the academic term
  • Children of part-time faculty and staff will receive an exemption amount on a pro-rata basis equivalent to the parent's percentage of employment
  • Eligibility ends when exemption has been received 10 semesters/summer sessions at any institution(s) or student has received a baccalaureate degree

Clinical Preceptors and Their Dependents

Eligibility

  • For clinical preceptors and their children under 25 years old
  • Must be Texas residents and must be enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin to claim the exemption
  • Preceptor must hold RN licensure and be under a written preceptor agreement with the School of Nursing during the semester for which an exemption is sought
  • Eligibility ends when exemption has been received 10 semesters/summer sessions at any institution(s) or student has received a baccalaureate degree

Exempted:
Tuition up to $500.00 per semester

Exemption for Children of Currently Deployed Military Service Members

Eligibility:

  • A child must demonstrate that he or she is a dependent child, including a stepchild, of a member of the Armed Forces of the United States who is a Texas resident or entitled to pay resident tuition.
  • The military service member must be deployed on active duty for the purpose of engaging in a combative military operation outside of the United States.

Foster and Adopted Children

Eligibility:

  • Must have been in foster care or other residential care under the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services on or after the day preceding the student's eighteenth birthday; the day of the student's fourteenth birthday if the student was also eligible for adoption on or after that day; or the day the student graduated from high school or received the equivalent of a high school diploma
  • The student must enroll as an undergraduate not later than the third anniversary of the date the student was discharged from the foster or other residential care, the date the student graduated from high school, or the date the student received the equivalent of a high school diploma, whichever date is earliest; or the student's twenty-first birthday
  • Or a student who was adopted and was the subject of an adoption assistance agreement under subchapter D, chapter 162, Texas Family Code

Hazlewood Act Exemption for Spouses and Children of Texas Veterans

Eligibility:

  • Spouses and natural and adopted children of members of the United States armed forces who entered service at locations in Texas, declared Texas as their homes of record, or would have been determined to be Texas residents when they entered service, and who became totally disabled as a result of a service-related injury for purposes of employability according to the disability rating of the Department of Veterans Affairs, or who died while in service, are missing in action, or whose deaths are documented to be directly caused by illness or injury connected to service in the armed forces of the United States during the Spanish-American War or World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict (June 27, 1950 to July 27, 1953), the Cold War (began June 27, 1950), the Vietnam era (Dec. 21, 1961 to May 7, 1975), the Grenada and Lebanon era (Aug. 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984), the Panama era (Dec. 20, 1989 to Jan. 21, 1990), the Persian Gulf War (Aug. 2, 1990 to March 3, 1991), the National Emergency by Reason of Certain Terrorist Attacks (began Sept. 11, 2001), or any future national emergency declared in accordance with federal law

  • Spouses and natural and adopted children of members of the Texas National Guard or the Texas Air National Guard who became totally disabled as a result of a service-related injury for purposes of employability according to the disability rating of the Department of Veterans Affairs, or were killed since Jan. 1, 1946 while on active duty in the service either of Texas or of the United States

  • Must have been claimed as a dependent for tax purposes the year preceding the year of the veteran's death or disabling injury

  • Must not have educational benefits under federal legislation that may be used only for the payment of tuition and fees or the value of federal benefits that may be used only for the payment of tuition and fees must be less than the value of the tuition and fees

  • Must be classified by the university as a Texas resident for the semester for which the exemption is sought.

  • Must not be in default on an education loan made or guaranteed by the federal government or the State of Texas

  • Must have attempted fewer than 150 credit hours using the Hazlewood Act exemption beginning with fall 1995

Requests for exemption must be received by the 12th class day of each long semester and the 4th class day of the summer sessions. The required Post 9/11 GI Bill benefit letter from the Department of Veterans' Affairs must be received by the last class day of the semester.

Hazlewood Act Exemption for Texas Ex-Service Members

Eligibility:

  • Must have served in the armed forces of the United States during the Spanish-American War or World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict (June 27, 1950 to July 27, 1953), the Cold War (began June 27, 1950), the Vietnam era (Dec. 21, 1961 to May 7, 1975), the Grenada and Lebanon era (Aug. 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984), the Panama era (Dec. 20, 1989 to Jan. 21, 1990), the Persian Gulf War (Aug. 2, 1990 to March 3, 1991), the National Emergency by Reason of Certain Terrorist Attacks (began Sept. 11, 2001) or any future national emergency declared in accordance with federal law

  • He or she entered the service at a location in Texas, declared Texas as the person’s home of record, or would have been determined to be a resident of Texas as determined in accordance with the Texas Education Code

  • Must have served at least 181 days of active military duty and received an honorable discharge from service, a general discharge from service under honorable conditions, or an honorable separation from service

  • Must not have educational benefits under federal legislation that may be used only for the payment of tuition and fees, or the value of the federal benefits that may be used only for the payment of tuition and fees must be less than the value of the tuition and fees

  • Must not be in default on an education loan made or guaranteed by the federal government or the State of Texas

  • Must have attempted fewer than 150 credit hours using the Hazlewood Act exemption beginning with fall 1995

  • The Hazlewood Legacy Act allows veterans to transfer their unused hours from their Hazlewood exemption (up to 150 credit hours) to a child or dependent; the eligible child must be a Texas resident who is 25 years of age or younger on the first day of the semester and must make satisfactory academic progress towards degree as determined by the institution.

Eligibility:
Surviving spouse and dependent children whose parent or spouse was killed in the line of duty while employed in certain public service positions

Exempted:
Tuition; required fees; room and board; textbook stipend

Participants in Military Funerals

Eligibility:
Students in grades 6-12 and postsecondary students who sound Taps during a military funeral in Texas. The student receives a voucher for the exemption from the funeral director.

Exempted:
$25 per voucher in tuition
