Npasswd - A better password change program |
Npasswd is a replacement for the passwd command for UNIX. New passwords are stringently screened to decrease the chance of having passwords vulnerable to guessing by programs such as Crack. In addition npasswd addresses other deficiencies found in many vendor-supplied passwd programs. |
Combining intelligent password screening with a shadow database provides the best protection short of one-time use passwords or challenge/response smart card systems. |
| Vendors are getting better about vetting passwords, so npasswd may not be appropriate for every platform. |
| Npasswd is designed to replace the programs passwd, chfn and chsh. It should work under most versions of UNIX. |
Configuring npasswd requires some thought on the part of the administrator. It's not a "plug and play" process. There are configuration options to select, and there is policy in the code that may not meet your needs. |
