The music still swings in the city that was home to Count Basie. But “KC” is much more than jazz: it’s art, architecture and barbeque sauce, too! Get a full picture of this sophisticated city’s arts from lectures, guided walks, and local experts. Take notes on jazz from ragtime to bebop, followed by a field trip to the American Jazz Museum, and live music in the historic 18th and Vine District. Art lectures and docents bring alive the new expansion project, opened in spring 2007, at the Nelson-Atkins. Explore contemporary art at the Kemper; walk the fantastical Moorish-style Country Club Plaza. Visit realist artist Thomas Hart Benton’s home/studio and stretch your own talents in a painting/drawing class at the Kansas City Art Institute.
