The General Education Development (GED) test battery gives you the opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma, a credential recognized as a key to employment opportunities, advancement, and further education. The GED tests are offered in English to Texas residents, aged 18 or older. As an alternative to a high school diploma, sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds may be permitted to take the GED if certain requirements are met (see Requirements for Minors).

The GED includes tests in five areas: Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics (visit Test Descriptions). There is a GED registration fee that covers testing, the score report, and, if applicable, a state certificate of completion (visit Score Reports & Certificates). The passing standard for Texas is a minimum score of 410 on each test AND an average of 450 overall (2,250 total points). Under certain circumstances, GED retesting may be permitted (visit Retesting).
