According to Texas State Board of Education rules, school districts must offer examinations for acceleration at every grade level and for every subject area offered in grades 1 - 12. To help schools serve this mandate, the K-16 Education Center offers a wide array of exams.

Credit by Exam (CBE)

At the option of the local school district, students in grades 6 - 12 who have not received credit but have received previous instruction in a subject area may earn credit for the subject by passing an exam (with a score of 70) that assesses the student’s knowledge and skills in that subject area.

Exam for Acceleration (EA)

A student in grades 1-5, who has not received instruction at the grade level tested, must be accelerated (promoted) one grade if the student meets the following requirements:

  1. The student achieves a minimum score of 90 percent on the grade-level exam in each of the following subject areas: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
  2. A school district representative recommends that the student be accelerated to the higher grade level.
  3. The student’s parent or guardian gives written approval for the acceleration.

Students in grades 6-12 seeking placement credit in a subject area in which they have not received prior instruction may earn credit by passing these exams with a grade of 90.

According to Texas State Board of Education rules, school districts must offer Examination for Acceleration at every grade level and for every subject area offered in grades 1-12.

Economy & Flexibility

The K-16 Education Center offers volume discounts to institutions. We offer a liberal testing period of 60 days.

Convenience

Study guides are available for all K-12 tests in a free online printable format, available even before students are enrolled. Each exam is sealed in an envelope labeled with the student’s name, and all envelopes are sent in a pre-assembled batch and are ready for test day. Two versions of each middle school and high school exam are available to meet re-examination needs.

Objectivity

Use of the University’s exams protects against conflicts between patrons and local school districts concerning the appropriateness of locally developed exams for use as Credit by Examination.

Responsiveness

There is grade availability within two weeks after the K-16 Education Center receives a completed exam.
