MITS is a 40-hour training seminar designed specifically for medical support personnel who interpret for Spanish speaking patients and English speaking doctors. The program is intended for those who are entering or working in the medical field or in a healthcare setting. This program prepares students with the theoretical, linguistic and procedural backgrounds necessary to comply with the Medical Interpreting Standards of Practice.

The seminar covers key aspects of medical terminology in Spanish and English including descriptions of human anatomy, physiological systems, medical specialties, medical procedures and technologies. The seminar also instructs participants in medical interpreter policies, protocols and ethics. Finally, the seminar develops advanced skills in medical interpretation in the consecutive mode through guided practice.

This training course is approved by the International Medical Interpreter’s Association. Successful completion of all four modules qualifies the participants to take the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreter’s Exam.

Program Objectives

This program helps students:

  • Master medical terminology in Spanish.
  • Understand the ethical duties of medical interpreters.
  • Understand appropriate protocol in the provision of medical interpreting services.

Understand federal and state policies that regulate medical interpreters. MITS is an IMIA-recognized medical interpreter training program. Successful completion of the MITS program qualifies participants to sit for the National Board Examination.

Who Should Attend

  • Nurses, physicians, pharmacists, front office staff, receptionists, dieticians, laboratory technicians, social workers, etc. who are bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Interpreters and translators who are entering or currently employed in the medical field or healthcare settings, such as hospitals, physicians’ offices, pharmacies, rehabilitation clinics, etc.
  • Independent interpreters.
  • Individuals seeking employment in the medical field or in a healthcare setting.

Admission Requirements

Participants should be proficient in English and Spanish.

Scheduling and Pricing

  • Classes will be held on Fridays from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m and Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • This course consists of four modules, and registration for each module is $400. Contact the registrar to pay for individual modules or click on the modules below listed under courses.
  • Participants also have the option to pay collectively for the entire course (all four modules) by clicking on the appropriate button above for $1,600.00
  • Registration fee includes the materials for the course. However, it does not include the fee for the national board certification exam.
  • Registration for each module will remain open until 2 weeks prior to the start date of the module.

      Upon completing this course, participants qualify to take the National Board for Certification of Medical Interpreters Exam. Participants must register with the national board in order to qualify for the test. Qualifications include:

      3. Demonstration of proficiency in English
      4. Demonstration of proficiency in Spanish

      Future Term Courses and Enrollments

      Most certificate programs are offered three terms per year, spring, summer and fall. Individual workshops are offered at least once each semester. Information about upcoming courses is available when enrollment opens each term. Some certificate programs consist of individual workshops while others are cohort style programs, please contact the coordinator for more information.

      • Spring term: Enrollment opens in early October, workshops or certificate programs are offered January – May
      • Summer term: Enrollment opens in early March, workshops or certificate programs are offered June - August
      • Fall term: Enrollment opens in June, workshops or certificate programs are offered September - December
