    Whichever format you decide is best for you, be assured that you will develop the same skills and knowledge no matter what you choose. The certificate you receive makes no distinction between the instructor-led and online program. Those who successfully complete the program will be awarded a Paralegal Certificate from Continuing and Innovative Education’s Professional Development Center at The University of Texas at Austin.

    Course Details

    The paralegal field continues to expand with paralegals performing a number of critical functions in law offices, government organizations and as freelance professionals. To facilitate the need for well-trained paralegals, the Professional Development Center is proud to offer the Paralegal Certificate Program. This hands-on program is distinguished by a focus on paralegal-specific, application-based skills that are in high demand by law firms and legal divisions. Gain a comprehensive understanding and thorough knowledge of paralegal responsibilities. Become a valuable asset in any law office.

    In just four months, the Paralegal Certificate Program focuses on developing highly sought after skills utilized daily by paralegals in the workplace. Designed with the working student in mind, and offered in both classroom and online formats, the Paralegal Certificate Program provides the education you need to begin a paralegal career or advance an existing career in the legal field. The high quality of this curriculum, combined with the dynamic study support and expertise of its instructors, all members of the bar association, result in an unparalleled and dynamic educational experience. Manuals and support are available in both Spanish and English.

    Who Should Attend

    This program is for anyone considering a paralegal career, career changers, current paralegals and others who work in law firms or government offices, as well as those considering law school. Many of the skills developed in non-legal fields (such as nursing, accounting, business management, law enforcement, medical and teaching) are transferable to the paralegal profession.

    Requirements

    At a minimum, a high school diploma is required to enroll in this program. In addition, participants need both word processing and basic Internet skills. Participants are required to have Internet access and e-mail. The Internet Explorer Web browser is preferred.

    Program Completion Requirements

    The instructor led Paralegal Certificate Program consists of the following courses:

    • Essential Skills for Paralegals
    • Tort Law
    • Contract Law
    • Texas Practices and Procedures

    Students must successfully complete the full Paralegal Certificate Program. Class projects, including library research, exams and a comprehensive final will be administered. Participants must achieve at least 70% cumulatively on the substantives, as well as 70% on the comprehensive final in order to earn the certificate. Since this is a non-credit program, students are not assigned a final grade in the course. Transcripts will be issued upon request with all course work marked either “complete” or “incomplete”.

    Attendance Policy

    Students are expected to attend all classes as scheduled. In the event that a student must miss a class, the student must notify the instructor and discuss how missed work might be completed. The Paralegal Certificate Program adheres to a strict 70% attendance policy in both the Essential Skills portion of the program and in each of the substantive classes. If a student violates the attendance policy, he or she will be asked to leave the program.

    Course Materials

    Students are required to pay for their books separately. The online book link is provided below for more information on pricing. Students must purchase these books for the program:

    • Essential Skills for Paralegals Bundle
    • Torts and Personal Injury Law
    • Introduction to the Law of Contracts
    • O’Connor’s Civil Procedures

    The books take three to seven business days for delivery, so we recommend students purchase all texts two weeks prior to the class start. You may purchase the books at www.books.utexasparalegal.com.

    Financial Assistance

    The UT Austin Professional Development Center’s Paralegal Certificate Program is a non-credit certificate program, and does not qualify for most college loans. However, students may apply for Private Loans specifically designed for non-credit courses where students are not required to attend school part time.

    The UT Austin Professional Development Center does not imply or guarantee that you will qualify for a loan. Students who choose our Promissory Note incur a $50.00 deferment fee which is included in the deposit. The Promissory Note may be applicable for the online program on a case by case basis. This information is provided as a service to our participants.

    Promissory Note
    Students who pay a deposit of $1,150.00 when registering for the instructor led program must sign a promissory note agreeing to make 3 additional payments of $1,165.00 per month throughout the program, a credit card is required.
