Texas Mine Safety and Health Program

The Texas Mine Safety and Health Program (TMSHP), is a federally-funded grant program that is part of the Professional Development Center at the University of Texas at Austin. The TMSHP is responsible for providing safety and health training and a variety of other services in order to improve the conditions of mine safety and health within Texas.

The TMSHP seeks not only to provide training required by law, but also to develop and promote other health and safety programs for the benefit of Texas miners, contractors working on mining properties, and the overall mining industry within the State. Because Spanish is the primary, and sometimes the only language of many miners employed within Texas, a considerable portion of the training materials and a significant percentage of their training is provided in Spanish to meet client needs.

The TMSHP encourages all mine operators and mining contractors to join and participate in the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association. The Holmes Association has 15 active District Councils within Texas. Members participate in local meetings as well as the association’s national safety and health recognitions and scholarship programs. In order to further reinforce their organizational safety cultures and continue to develop strong, positive attitudes towards safety and health, all members of the mining community are also encouraged to attend and participate in the annual MSHA South Central District Conference.
