Blowout Prevention, 3rd Ed.
Rotary Drilling Unit III: Nonroutine Operations, Lesson 3Price: $30.00
Catalog No. 2.30330
The subject of well pressure control, which is a more apt description of the practices that constitute blowout prevention, must continue as the most important single consideration among members of a crew on a drilling rig. Failure to control a well, to allow a blowout, brings about a situation that can only be described as a disaster - because of the economic loss that is sure to follow, the environmental impact that will probably occur, the possible injury to personnel, and the bad (usually distorted) publicity that accrues.
A drilling crew composed of members who are knowledgeable about the conditions that can threaten the loss of well-pressure control, the steps necessary to prevent loss of control, and the proper operation of equipment to maintain control has nearly perfect odds against a blowout. The necessary knowledge, which can be gained by careful study of this training manual, must be augmented by meaningful training at regular intervals, using simulators and practice sessions on the rig.
Topics covered include:
- Formation pressure
- Abnormal-pressure formations
- Kick detection
- Killing a well kick onshore and offshore
- Mistakes in well control
- Special problems in well control
- Preventer equipment and stacks
- Preventer tests and drills
This expanded edition is not only an updated version of other editions, but it also contains new sections that are intended to bring the material more in line with the coverage required by the United States Geological Survey Offshore Continental Shelf Standard No. T1, which sets specific requirements for the training and certification of personnel employed as members of offshore drilling crews. 1980, 99 pp. ISBN 0-88698-051-8.
