Not every well has to be a straight hole. Since 1895, wells have been deviated for such purposes as sidetracking equipment stuck in the hole. Often holes thought to be straight were in fact crooked. However in 1930, a contractor who was denied permission to assemble a rig on a pier for the purpose of drilling offshore instead assembled his rig on dry land and drilled a slanted hole to reach the same spot. This was the first recorded application of controlled directional drilling: deviating a wellbore along a planned course to an underground target located a given horizontal distance from the top of the hole.
This training manual is an introduction to the science of controlled directional drilling. A reader will learn the types and uses of directional holes, how a well is planned, what information and equipment are needed and how they are obtained and used, and some of the problems associated with directional drilling. Clear writing and helpful self-test review questions help the reader to comprehend the topic. 1984, 46 pp. ISBN 0-88698-099-2.
