  • How to Access an e-Book on a Computer

    What to expect when you purchase an e-Book:

    After you purchase the e-Book(s), you will receive three (3) emails from PETEX; please check your junk or spam folder if you do not receive these emails.

    • The first email will contain your receipt of purchase.
    • The second email will give you access to the website where you can download the viewer program and the e-book.
    • The third email will contain the licensing file which you will use to unlock the e-book. The licensing file looks like this once you download it. license file
    • You must first install the secure viewer software and then double click on the licensing file which you received in the second email. After this, you will be able to open the e-book.

    How to Access an e-Book on an iPad

    What to expect when you purchase an iPad e-Book:

    After you purchase the e-Book(s), you will receive three (2) emails from PETEX; please check your junk or spam folder if you do not receive these emails.

    • The first email will contain your receipt of purchase.
    • The second email is a registration email you will use to login to our online learning website.
    • Once you login you will see instructions on how to download and instal the PETEX app for iPad.
    • Once you have instsalled the PETEX app from the Apple app store, you will login with the user name provided to you in the registration email.
    • You will then see your e-book in the app and can download and open it on your iPad.

    How to Access an e-Book on a USB Device

    What to expect when you purchase this device:

    After you purchase the e-Book on USB, you will receive your receipt and the USB will be shipped to you.

    • The USB is only functional on a Windows computer and will not work on a Mac or tablet.
    • When you open the USB device on your computer you will see a file that is titled "autorun" and the e-book you have purchased. You can double click on either of these files to open the book.
    • The USB cannot be copied or duplicated and will disable at the end of your license period.
    • If the USB is lost, PETEX will not replace the device.
    • If the USB is damaged or does not function properly, the USB must be shipped to PETEX to receive a replacement. Please contact petex@www.utexas.edu for details.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and Troubleshooting Tips

    Answers to most common problems and issues are listed below. If your specific issue is not addressed, please do not hesitate to contact PETEX Technical Support, at 800-687-7839 / option 2.

    1) I have forgotten my password.

  • Your password is only needed for access to the secure viewer software and to download the e-book. The licensing file you received in an email is what is needed to open your e-book. No password is needed to open your e-book.
  • To reset your password for the website to download your e-book, Click Here and choose "Lost Password?" just below the login.
  • 2) I have forgotten my user name.

  • Your user name is only needed for access to the secure viewer software and to download the e-book. The user name was sent to you in an email the day you purchased your e-book.

  • 3) I did not receive my receipt.

  • Please contact our sales staff at petex@www.utexas.edu
  • 4) I did not receive an email giving me access to the e-book.

  • Please contact our technical staff at petextechservice@austin.utexas.edu
  • 5) I did not receive an email containing the license file needed to unlock my e-book.

  • 4) I am unable to open my e-book.

    Please ensure you are following the correct steps in accessing our e-books:

    • Make sure you follow these steps in the order that they are given.
      1. Install the SafeGaurd Viewer software first.
      2. Next double click on the licensing file which you received attached to an email. It should look something like this:REQUIRED
        If you cannot find this file or the email it was attached to please contact petextechservice@austin.utexas.edu
      3. Now you should be able to double click on the e-book and it will open. It should function now whether you are connected to the internet or not connected.

    5) I am having trouble installing the Safeguard viewing software on my Mac.

  • On the latest Mac operating system (OSX 10.9 Mavericks) the SafeGaurd Viewer software is blocked from installation. To get around this, right click on the installer and choose "Open". This will give you the option to allow it to be installed. The software developer is currently working on an updated version for the Mac.
  • 8) Can I download an e-Book to more than one computer?

  • No. Your license allows for use on one device only.
  • 9) I am having trouble printing and copying content from the e-Book.

  • PETEX does not permit printing or copying of its e-Book content under the terms of license that you agreed to when you purchased the e-Book. If you would like a printed book you can purchase this by going here or contacting our sales staff at petex@www.utexas.edu.
