Depending on the reservoir drive mechanism, a substantial amount of oil will be left in the reservoir at the end of primary production. For example, depletion drives generally leave between 75% and 90% of the original oil in place. There are some techniques used to improved recovery. In this module you will learn:

  • the basic features of improved recovery techniques
  • definitions of sweep efficiency and displacement efficiency
  • factors affecting sweep efficiency
  • types and primary uses of improved recovery techniques including:
    • waterflooding
    • miscible and inmiscible gas injection
    • water-alternating gas injection
    • polymer flooding
    • surfactant-polymer flooding
    • alkaline-surfactant-polymer flooding
    • steam drive
    • steam-assissted gravity drainage
    • cyclic steam injection
    • in situ combustion

The Improved Recovery Techniques module consists of the following:

  • Lesson 1- Overview
  • Lesson 2- Waterflooding
  • Lesson 3- Gas Injection
  • Lesson 4- Chemical Flooding
  • Lesson 5- Thermal Recovery
  • Improved Recovery Techniques glossary
  • Quiz
